The sixth annual Scramble Against
Cancer was held last month at the Sonnenalp Golf Club
in Singletree.
The scramble tournaments, specifically
organized to raise funds to acquire specialized diagnostic
instrumentation for the Shaw Regional Cancer Center
in Edwards, have helped pay for state-of-the-art diagnostic
imaging equipment.
The Sonnenalp Breast Diagnostic Imaging
Center, housed in the Shaw cancer center, began treating
patients in the early fall of 2002.
Among this year's top sponsors were
One Willow Bridge Road, Phoenix Oil and Gas Ltd.,
the Sonnenalp Resort of Vail, the Sonnenalp Golf Club
and its members, East West Partners, John McDonald
and Rob Wright, Vail Sports, Beaver Creek Sports,
David and Jackie Simon, and Guaranty Bank and Trust
Company.
Twenty-four businesses and individuals
in all came forward with major sponsorships ranging
from $2,000 to $20,000, and well over half the field
consisted of teams sponsored by regional and community
businesses.
Local individuals and businesses purchased
enough sponsorships to ring the course more than three
times around, and an anonymous donor has matched each
of these sponsorships.
Local businesses also provided food
and beverages for the buffet, which was prepared by
the Sonnenalp's culinary staff for the dinner and
dance at the Sonnenalp Golf Club clubhouse.
Resort stays - donated by East West
Resorts and Sonnenalp Resort of Vail - were awarded
to the three winning teams.
Top honors were claimed by Rob Rifkin,
Kathleen and Jack Eck, and Robert Norris for the Rocky
Mountain Cancer Centers team. The FirstBank team,
which included Roger Behler, Larry Anderson, Bill
Plummer and George Knox, claimed second place honors.
Third place went to Mike Rosen, Sheika
Gramshammer, Tom Gargan and Johannes Faessler.
